“Patani”, as Thailand’s southern border provinces are known to local Malay-Muslims,
has faced habitual violence over several decades. This collection of articles analyses the conflict underpinning this violence from a variety of perspectives.
The conflict is presented as a power struggle arising from the contested histories and discourses of the conflict parties.
Factors that have shaped conflict dynamics over the years, such as expanding Thai military influence and national-level political developments,
are discussed. The book also considers the role of language,
religion, education and ethnic identity in collectively influencing livelihood and economic opportunity in the region.
Parallel peacebuilding efforts encompassing peace talks, judicial processes,
and civil society initiatives are explored. Ultimately,
the book examines why such approaches have yet to lead to a genuinely peaceful settlement of the conflict and demonstrates that,
fundamentally, the “Southern Problem” is a political problem requiring a political solution.
